The Charles A. Dukes award, named
after the first director of Alumni Affairs and a longtime Duke
volunteer, was established in 1982 to recognize individuals for
outstanding volunteer service. Each year, nominations are
submitted by the staff of the Alumni Affairs and Annual Fund offices
and approved by their respective boards. More than 200 volunteers
have received this prestigious award. The university is proud
to introduce the 2006-07 Charles A. Dukes Award winners.

As a student and an Alumna, Duke University has provided me with many opportunities and enriched my life in many ways. The debt I owe to Duke is huge. Therefore, I give back as much as I am able so that students today can be afforded the opportunity to have a Duke experience and maximize their potentials.
From the first moment I saw the four spires of the Chapel rising from the grassy hill on Wanamaker Drive, I have been in love and inspired by all that is Duke. Being a part of the Duke Community has given me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself and for that I am grateful. I am very proud to be a Dukie.

The LL.M. at Duke really was turning point in my life. I was overwhelmed by the great environment as well as the enthusiastic staff and students. My stay at Duke not only broadened my horizon and let me make new friends but also gave room for new ideas and finally let me choose the path which I am on right now as a media lawyer in Munich.
I like to volunteer for Duke because I would like to: give back to the university; help others to have the same great experience; keep up the “Duke Spirit” abroad; and network with Dukies. After 6 years of organizing events for the Duke Club of Germany I am still astonished by the fact that every event is a nice one, because you are sure to have fun, open-minded and interesting people on board. Go Duke!

The reason I volunteer at Duke is admittedly selfish ... it makes me feel good to share my skills, experience, and ideas to further this university and support all of its stakeholders. Volunteering on- and off-campus has enabled me to get re-acquainted with the Pratt Engineering School through current students, staff members, faculty and fellow alumni. The volunteer activities have allowed me to learn much more about where Duke has been; to reminisce about my own Duke experiences; and to see the University evolve through current students' eyes. Volunteering has been and continues to be a thought-provoking journey that I encourage everyone to try.

I volunteer because I believe that fortunate and responsible members of a community are obligated to invest in and provide support to the less fortunate community members. This is an investment that can only strengthen the community’s foundation and future. I volunteer for Duke, namely for the Children’s Classic and Jimmy V Kids Klassic, because I believe in their mission to help children and their families overcome the adversity they are experiencing. The doctors, nurses, and staff at Duke Children’s Hospital enable families to maintain a sense of hope and strength to overcome the medical hardship they face. Volunteering for these worthy causes helps me keep in perspective and to appreciate the good fortunes of my family.
